Food Defense = attempting to protect food from adulteration introduced for the purposes of causing harm, including terrorism, extortion, revenge and other malicious damage. In the USA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refers to such adulteration as ‘Intentional Adulteration’. This is separate and different to food fraud-related adulteration, which is perpetrated for economic gain.
All USA food companies are required to have a food defense plan under the Intentional Adulteration rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
